CLEANING

Although more than once
my cleaning lady forbade me
to touch the keyboard
with my hands dirty

I crept while she was burning
my books in the kitchen
with unwashed hands
back to the chastened board

and hammered frenzied
letters of bliss and jollity
freed of the old
devoid of time.
