BIOGRAPHY

Erik Jan Harmens was born on that average summer's day of 10th July 1970 in Harderwijk and grew up in slumber city Alphen aan den Rijn. As early on as 1985 he started writing poems and songs. Since then he has performed hundreds of times, e.g. at the Nuyorican Poets Café in New York.

On 5th May 2001 he won the finals of the Poetry Slam Festina Lente in Amsterdam and on 19th April 2002 the finals of the Nijmegen Poetry Slam. A month later he won the national Poetry Slam in Doornroosje in Nijmegen, otherwise known as the 'Grand City Slam'.

The Amsterdam team, besides Harmens made up of Tjitske Jansen, Eus and Sven Ariaans, also received the Golden Typewriter – the prize for best slam city, kindly donated by Bart FM Droog on behalf of the the city of Groningen.

Poems of his have appeared in magazines such as 'MillenniuM', 'Begane Grond', 'Rottend Staal' and 'De Brakke Hond', and also in the anthology Drugs - verslavende gedichten (Drugs – addictive poetry), compiled by Vrouwkje Tuinman and Ingmar Heytze (Uitgeverij 521, 2002). At the Lowlands festival 2001 he performed alongside Herman van Bostelen in the programme Beeldspraak (26th August 2001).

In 2002 Harmens took to the stage at Lowlands and the Wintertuin Festival. On 21st September 2003 his first volume of poetry appeared, entitled In Menigten (In Crowds), with publishers Nijgh & Van Ditmar.
