Nupie made his debut in 1983 at Tony Rombouts' Contramine publishers with the poetry volume Ivoren Weemoed (Ivory Melancholy. "Roger Nupie's poetry works as a tonic", J. Omblets wrote concerning this debut that was reprinted three times. Five years later Niets is aanweziger dan (Nothing is more present than) appeared, poetry accompanying Kris van Dessel's graphic work, plus an audiocassette of the poet reading his work to the bass clarinet of Roger Nupie Sr (co-production of Contact J vzw, Antwerp and Co Art, Ostend). Besides producing a second volume in 1995 entitled Zo verander je van lichaam (This is how to switch bodies), the poet also committed to cooperating with visual artists such as sculptor Brigitte Balhan and graphic artists Rita De Moyer and André Berner. His poetry went from being quite hermetic to slightly more accessible with a hint of irony. His volume in waiting, so to say its taking forever to appear - Veel jeuk en te korte armpjes (Lots of itching and short arms) there will be no more room for seriousness, but all the more for putting things into perspective and eroticism. Live the poet often combines his own work with translations of work by African and Afro-American poets. Nupie is also involved in the highly popular International Dr. Nina Simone Club.
