Marcel van Maele was born on that rainy 10th April 1931 in Bruges and is a poet, prose writer and playwriter. In his young years he fought as a volunteer in the Korean War. He made his debut in 1956 with the poetry volume Soetja and was considered one of the so-called 'Young wild ones of Flanders' (Jonge wilden van Vlaanderen), which were active in the first half of the sixties. With Max Kazan, Leon van Essche, Hugo Neefs and Ivo Vroom he initiated the magazine 'Labris' in 1962. Poems of his have appeared in over 20 anthologies and in literary magazines such as 'Nieuw Vlaams Tijdschrift', 'De Vlaamse Gids' and 'Dietsche Warande & Belfort'. He took part in Poetry International Rotterdam in 1974 and 1982. In 1999 Marcel van Maele read his work at the The Hague Speaks Festival (Den Haag Taalt), a highly peculiar event as due to his being blind, he was accompanied by a tape deck.
